The Art of the Statement Staircase
A staircase is the one piece of architecture you move through every day. Done well, it becomes the heart of a home — sculptural, structural and unforgettable.
By SA Designs & Associates

In most homes the staircase is treated as plumbing — necessary, hidden, ignored. In the homes we love most, it is the centrepiece: the first thing you see, the form the whole interior is composed around.
Sculpture you can climb
A great staircase resolves two demands at once. It must carry you safely between floors, and it must look extraordinary doing it. The geometry of a curve, the rhythm of the balusters, the way light falls across the treads — these turn a functional object into the sculptural heart of a space.

Designing around the descent
We often plan the entrance hall around the staircase rather than the other way round. The chandelier centres on it; sightlines lead to it; materials echo across it. When it anchors the composition this way, everything else in the hall feels intentional.
A staircase is the one piece of architecture you experience with your whole body.
Material and craft
Stone treads, an iron balustrade, a timber handrail worn smooth by hands — the materials of a staircase are touched daily, so they must be chosen to age beautifully. This is where craft matters most, and where the difference between ordinary and exceptional is felt underfoot.
